Essential Oils Market Size in Africa
The African essential oils market declined slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by +0.3% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Essential Oils Production in Africa
In value terms, essential oils production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Essential Oils Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of essential oils decreased by -12.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, essential oils exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Madagascar represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 44% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 8.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +102.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest essential oils supplier in Africa, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Madagascar totaled +16.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+10.4% per year) and Egypt (+4.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Essential Oils Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of essential oils decreased by -17.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 105%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, essential oils imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) were the main importers of essential oils, together committing 66% of total imports. The following importers - Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +27.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported essential oils in Africa, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 7.3% share.
In South Africa, essential oils imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-2.1% per year) and Swaziland (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 50%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
