Ether Market Size in Africa

The African ether market was estimated at $X in 2022, rising by 4.2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -3.5% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, exports of ethers in Africa contracted notably to X tons, which is down by -39.5% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ether exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 325%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporter of ethers in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (7.3%). The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+30.8%), Madagascar (+26.9%), Tunisia (+13.7%) and Kenya (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar, Tanzania, Tunisia and Kenya increased by +18, +6.8, +2.1 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest ether supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 1.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Madagascar amounted to +31.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-3.6% per year) and Tanzania (+21.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 46% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 199% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of ethers decreased by -16.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, ether imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Algeria represented the main importer of ethers in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 35% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together generating a 53% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +35.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 70% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +22.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
