In 2021, the African expanded clays market increased by 8.7% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 302%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 210% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Mozambique (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) represented the key exporter of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in Africa, constituting 80% of total export. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +62.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Uganda, Egypt and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +69.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -15.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag were imported in Africa; growing by 30% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, expanded clays imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) was the major importer of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in Africa, generating 73% of total import. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
