From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs, when their volume increased by 19% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 78%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, meat and fish extracts exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Botswana was the largest exporter of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 62% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together achieving a 34% share of total exports. Rwanda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +24.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+35.7%) and Tunisia (+21.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-31.5%) and Rwanda (-40.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana, Tunisia and Morocco increased by +60, +20 and +4.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest meat and fish extracts supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Botswana ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Morocco and Rwanda, which together accounted for a further 2.8%.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +24.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 24% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, meat and fish extracts export price increased by +56.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs increased by 2.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, meat and fish extracts imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), creating a 9% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+78.3%), Zimbabwe (+32.0%), Mozambique (+20.1%) and Egypt (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +78.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+43 p.p.), Egypt (+6.3 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.1 p.p.) and Togo (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by Togo, with a 7.5% share.

In Botswana, meat and fish extracts imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+18.8% per year) and Togo (+105.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 30% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, meat and fish extracts import price increased by +116.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 45%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
