Feldspar Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African feldspar market decreased by -3.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, shipments abroad of feldspar increased by 60% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 197%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, feldspar exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 145%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 95% of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +61.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest feldspar supplier in Africa, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +31.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (-0.8% per year) and Morocco (+13.9% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -31.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of feldspar was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, feldspar imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) was the main importer of feldspar, mixing up 57% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Algeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the feldspar imports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+7.7%) and Egypt (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tunisia (+18 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 87% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +3.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -16.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
