Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 454% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.2% share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys. At the same time, Zambia (+25.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +25.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.2 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania saw its share reduced by -2.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys supplier in Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 0.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +16.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-1.4% per year) and Zambia (+39.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 207%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 125% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 150% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 31% of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took near 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Libya (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

Imports into Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+33.8%), Senegal (+27.3%), Botswana (+25.9%), Ghana (+13.6%), Namibia (+10.9%), Libya (+10.2%) and Mozambique (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2021. Algeria and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-3.9%), Angola (-11.8%) and South Africa (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+13 p.p.), Madagascar (+9.1 p.p.), Senegal (+7.7 p.p.), Namibia (+2.7 p.p.), Ghana (+2.2 p.p.), Botswana (+2.2 p.p.) and Libya (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt, Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -5.6% and -14% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 47% share of total imports.

Madagascar, with a CAGR of +42.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
