Fig Market Size in Africa

The African fig market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Fig Production in Africa

In value terms, fig production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), with a combined 93% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average fig yield in Africa reduced modestly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -1.5% on 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of figs were harvested in Africa; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to fig production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of figs increased by 24% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 70%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fig exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Morocco was the largest exporter of figs in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 52% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together constituting a 39% share of total exports. The following exporters - Burkina Faso (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each amounted to a 5% share of total exports.

Exports from Morocco increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+30.8%), Swaziland (+5.0%), Tunisia (+3.9%) and South Africa (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+35 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia, South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -6.4%, -12.5% and -14.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fig supplier in Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, fig exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+1.7% per year) and Egypt (-3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -35.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Fig imports stood at X tons in 2022, with an increase of 2.5% on 2021. Overall, imports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fig imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total imports in 2022. Djibouti (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Libya (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports. Somalia (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Somalia (with a CAGR of +63.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported figs in Africa, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ethiopia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Djibouti, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled +11.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ethiopia (+48.4% per year) and Djibouti (+14.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
