Files And Rasps Market Size in Africa

After five years of growth, the African files and rasps market decreased by -10.9% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +70.0% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 5.8%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, files and rasps exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Tunisia (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - each resulted at a 3.9% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+73.4%) and Tanzania (+29.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +73.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Tunisia and Tanzania increased by +16, +2.4 and +1.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest files and rasps supplier in Africa, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, files and rasps exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+81.0% per year) and Tanzania (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 29% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, files and rasps export price increased by +65.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of files, rasps and similar tools decreased by -4.1% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +75.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, files and rasps imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Kenya (X units) was the largest importer of files, rasps and similar tools in Africa, generating 44% of total import. South Africa (X units) took a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (6.1%), Cameroon (5.7%) and Ethiopia (4.6%). Uganda (X units), Djibouti (X units), Mali (X units), Ghana (X units), Botswana (X units) and Mozambique (X units) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +44.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest files and rasps importing markets in Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X), together accounting for 34% of total imports. These countries were followed by Uganda, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Djibouti, Botswana and Mali, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +35.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 10%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
