Filter Block Market Size in Africa
In 2022, the African filter block market increased by 14% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Filter Block Production in Africa
In value terms, filter block production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 1,106%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp exported in Africa declined rapidly to X tons, dropping by -20.5% on the year before. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 944%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, filter block exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 770% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, creating 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to filter block exports from Egypt stood at -9.9%. At the same time, Tanzania (+49.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+2.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-6.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest filter block supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
In Egypt, filter block exports expanded at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+3.5% per year) and Tanzania (+52.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 84%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+27.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 92%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, filter block imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importer of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 30% of total imports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp. At the same time, Malawi (+23.8%), Nigeria (+21.6%), Ghana (+18.7%), Algeria (+18.6%), Tunisia (+13.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+11.9%), Uganda (+8.3%), Morocco (+6.5%), Gabon (+3.3%), Tanzania (+3.1%) and Cameroon (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tunisia, Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana, Malawi and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +8.9, +5.9, +3.5, +2.4, +1.9 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 9.1% share.
In South Africa, filter block imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+29.8% per year) and Tunisia (+13.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, filter block import price increased by +80.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
