Filter Paper Market Size in Africa

After three years of decline, the African filter paper market increased by 6.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Filter Paper Production in Africa

In value terms, filter paper production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape increased by 58% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 329% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 19% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the filter paper and paperboard cut to shape exports, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-8.9%) and Egypt (-24.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+39 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-15 p.p.) and Egypt (-22.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest filter paper supplier in Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Tunisia, filter paper exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-7.9% per year) and Egypt (-8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, filter paper export price increased by +201.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+20.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

For the fifth year in a row, Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape, which increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 47%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, filter paper imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2021. Nigeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Morocco (5.6%) and Kenya (5.5%). Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +24.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
