The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 33%. In 2022, the amount of first-aid boxes and kits exported in Africa reached X tons, surging by 8.3% compared with the previous year. In general, exports showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 80%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, first-aid kit exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tunisia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), constituting an 8.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - each finished at a 6.3% share of total exports.

Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +24.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+56.6%) and Egypt (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +56.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+44 p.p.) and Kenya (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-8.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-32.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest first-aid kit supplier in Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia amounted to +23.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-2.1% per year) and Egypt (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in South Africa ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) and Kenya ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of first-aid boxes and kits was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 63%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, first-aid kit imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 76%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented the key importers of first-aid boxes and kits in Africa, together reaching near 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together achieving a 24% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Angola (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Libya (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +49.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
