The African fish parts market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fish parts production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 20%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of fish heads, tails and maws increased by 91% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 123% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish parts exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) represented the major exporter of fish heads, tails and maws, creating 45% of total exports. Botswana (X tons) took a 29% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Uganda (6.9%), Senegal (5%) and Namibia (4.9%). The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +117.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fish parts supplying countries in Africa were Tanzania ($X), Uganda ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. Botswana, Senegal, Namibia and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.3%.
Among the main exporting countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +161.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -36.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 58%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+20.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fish Parts Imports
Imports in Africa
Fish parts imports shrank remarkably to X tons in 2022, waning by -18.4% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 439% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fish parts imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 2,222% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), constituting a 5.9% share of total imports. Benin (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish parts imports into Nigeria stood at +32.6%. At the same time, Benin (+55.8%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2022. Nigeria (+89 p.p.) and Benin (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo saw its share reduced by -35.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fish heads, tails and maws in Africa, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 2.3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (+48.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 331%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
