Exports in Africa
In 2021, exports of flat pallets and pallet collars of wood in Africa declined modestly to X units, remaining stable against the previous year. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +74.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, wood flat pallet exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 28%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X units) took a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (8.6%) and Morocco (6.9%). The following exporters - Mozambique (X units) and Swaziland (X units) - each recorded a 7.9% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+43.0%), Morocco (+36.8%), Mozambique (+22.1%), Botswana (+6.6%) and Tunisia (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Morocco, Swaziland, Mozambique and Botswana increased by +23, +6.4, +3.7, +3.2 and +2.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood flat pallet supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+38.9% per year) and Mozambique (+24.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wood Flat Pallet Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of flat pallets and pallet collars of wood imported in Africa reduced to X units, with a decrease of -12.9% against 2020. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -33.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood flat pallet imports plummeted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Botswana (X units), distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Mozambique (X units), Morocco (X units) and Swaziland (X units) represented the largest importers of flat pallets and pallet collars of wood, together making up 75% of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X units), Seychelles (X units), Tunisia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Angola (X units), Gambia (X units) and Zambia (X units) - together made up 20% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +138.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Morocco, Swaziland, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Angola, Zambia, Seychelles and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Gambia, with a CAGR of +60.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
