The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X tons of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) were exported in Africa; reducing by -8.4% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cold-rolled steel products exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporter of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) and Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cold-rolled steel products exports from South Africa stood at -7.0%. At the same time, Mozambique (+46.7%), Tunisia (+45.5%), Benin (+15.0%) and Senegal (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.9%) and Kenya (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+12 p.p.), Senegal (+5 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.8 p.p.), Benin (+1.9 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -22.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cold-rolled steel products supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+44.0% per year) and Egypt (-2.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 57% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cold-rolled steel products export price increased by +54.9% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cold-rolled steel products imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the key importers of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) in Africa, together reaching near 33% of total imports. Djibouti (X tons) held a 5.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (5.3%), South Africa (5.1%), Ethiopia (4.9%), Sudan (4.9%), Nigeria (4.8%) and Algeria (4.7%). The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cold-rolled steel products importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 43% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +16.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
