In 2021, overseas shipments of flours, meals and pellets of fish were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 64% of total exports. Angola (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (8.9%). Botswana (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish meals and pellet exports from South Africa stood at -1.1%. At the same time, Botswana (+111.6%), Kenya (+22.8%) and Senegal (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +111.6% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-15.1%) and Namibia (-25.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+37 p.p.), Senegal (+7.9 p.p.), Botswana (+3.5 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-6.9 p.p.) and Namibia (-10 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fish meals and pellet supplier in Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+21.1% per year) and Kenya (+34.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -18% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 131% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of flours, meals and pellets of fish imported in Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 506% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Nigeria represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 76% of total imports. At the same time, Guinea (+54.0%), Egypt (+35.6%) and Togo (+17.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Nigeria (+46 p.p.), Egypt (+5.3 p.p.) and Guinea (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-2.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish in Africa, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 3.6% share.

In Nigeria, fish meals and pellet imports expanded at an average annual rate of +35.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+12.4% per year) and Guinea (+49.6% per year).
