Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, seafood meals and pellets exports shrank to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +4.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, Morocco (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) were the major exporters of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in Africa, together recording near 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), generating a 15% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs decreased by -9.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, seafood meals and pellets imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the key importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Egypt (10%), Burkina Faso (5.6%), Mozambique (5.5%) and Uganda (5.2%). The following importers - Cameroon (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Benin (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -3.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+66.3%), Tunisia (+23.1%), Burkina Faso (+16.6%), Mozambique (+14.7%), Benin (+5.8%) and Zambia (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-8.3%), Zimbabwe (-9.6%), Cameroon (-14.0%) and South Africa (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+7.8 p.p.), Zambia (+5.7 p.p.), Uganda (+5.1 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+4.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+4.5 p.p.), Benin (+2 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-2.8 p.p.), Cameroon (-5.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 13% share.

In Nigeria, seafood meals and pellets imports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-6.7% per year) and Zambia (+6.8% per year).
