The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 10% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, meat meals and pellets export price increased by +105.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of flours, meals and pellets of meat or meat offal increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat meals and pellets imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of flours, meals and pellets of meat or meat offal, making up 62% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (6.7%). The following importers - Zambia (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 9.1% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+162.5%), Ghana (+22.0%), Zambia (+4.7%) and Zimbabwe (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +162.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-41.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+47 p.p.), Nigeria (+20 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+5.3 p.p.), Zambia (+3.1 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mozambique (-80 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 7.7% share.
In South Africa, meat meals and pellets imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+151.9% per year) and Zimbabwe (+5.0% per year).
