For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of fluorinated, brominated or iodinated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons, which decreased by -33.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 1,297%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 241%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest exporters of fluorinated, brominated or iodinated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons in Africa, together reaching near 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), making up an 18% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives supplier in Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +53.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+4.4% per year) and Tunisia (+1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 52% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 380% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of fluorinated, brominated or iodinated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons were imported in Africa; surging by 4.7% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -27.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.1% against 2019 indices. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Libya (X tons) were the major importers of fluorinated, brominated or iodinated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons, together achieving 70% of total imports. Sudan (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +37.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. Egypt, Sudan, Ghana, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Among the main importing countries, Sudan, with a CAGR of +41.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 36% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
