In 2021, overseas shipments of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines decreased by -6.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 49%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +60.5% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 91% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), creating a 4.8% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X), together comprising 99% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Kenya, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Imports in Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 0.7% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Imports by Country
In 2021, Djibouti (X tons), distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the largest importers of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines, together generating 64% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Djibouti was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines imports, with a CAGR of +79.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+27.0%), Ethiopia (+17.8%), Mozambique (+16.0%), Tanzania (+5.8%), Kenya (+5.5%), Namibia (+3.2%) and Senegal (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Angola and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-1.9%), Zimbabwe (-2.4%) and Nigeria (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Morocco, Mozambique and Kenya increased by +19, +5.5, +5.3, +4.4 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Djibouti ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 27% share of total imports.
Djibouti, with a CAGR of +68.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
