In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -59.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 163%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.3%).

Imports in Africa

For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of flywheels and pulleys, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +108.9% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the main importer of flywheels and pulleys, mixing up 39% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Algeria (8.2%) and Morocco (7.1%). The following importers - Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Libya (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flywheels and pulleys imports, with a CAGR of +20.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+14.0%), Libya (+13.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.6%), Morocco (+8.3%), Tanzania (+4.5%), Algeria (+3.2%) and South Africa (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.9%) and Egypt (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.9%, -4.7%, -5.8% and -9.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Egypt, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, Ghana, Libya and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +19.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
