Rwanda was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a 21% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each recorded a 4.6% share of total exports.

Rwanda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the food preparations for infants exports, with a CAGR of +103.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+13.0%) and South Africa (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Rwanda increased by +70 percentage points.

In value terms, the largest baby food supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Rwanda ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +108.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -21.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of food preparations for infants decreased by -25.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, baby food imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Algeria (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 37% of total imports in 2021. Libya (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.7% share, followed by Egypt (5.6%). The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) - together made up 28% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Libya ($X) and Nigeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports. Egypt, Morocco, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Angola, Senegal, Guinea and Somalia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +33.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
