Leather Footwear Market Size in Africa

The African leather footwear market surged to $X in 2021, growing by 19% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leather Footwear Production in Africa

In value terms, leather footwear production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -14.7% against 2019 indices. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of leather footwear were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) represented the main exporter of leather footwear, comprising 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), creating a 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of -1.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest leather footwear supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +0.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per kg in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Ethiopia ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leather Footwear Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of leather footwear increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +83.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of leather footwear, namely Sudan, Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana, Algeria, Botswana, Rwanda, Djibouti, Morocco, Kenya, Angola and Libya, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +65.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather footwear in Africa, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 7.2% share.

In South Africa, leather footwear imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sudan (+33.8% per year) and Algeria (+16.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per kg in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Botswana ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
