In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest formic acid, its salts and esters supplier in Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 4.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Cameroon, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +81.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+1.3% per year) and Cameroon (+30.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 251% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+41.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

At the same time, Liberia (+38.3%), Algeria (+16.0%), Gabon (+14.1%), Djibouti (+11.2%) and Ethiopia (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.3% from 2012-2021. Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-1.5%), Morocco (-1.6%) and Kenya (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+23 p.p.), Algeria (+5.3 p.p.), Djibouti (+4.1 p.p.) and Liberia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-2.7 p.p.), Morocco (-3.2 p.p.) and Kenya (-4.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported formic acid, its salts and esters in Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 10% share.
In South Africa, imports of formic acid, its salts and esters increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+4.3% per year) and Algeria (+20.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
