The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Exports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal were exported in Africa; waning by -5.2% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sudan was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 60% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (9.4%) and Namibia (8.4%). Tanzania (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Sudan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal exports, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.0%) and South Africa (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sudan and Botswana increased by +55 and +5.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sudan ($X) remains the largest fresh beef carcase supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sudan stood at +42.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-10.4% per year) and Namibia (-1.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, fresh beef carcase export price increased by +107.9% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The following importers - South Africa (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh beef carcase imports into Algeria stood at +16.7%. At the same time, Egypt (+24.7%), Tunisia (+4.6%) and Mozambique (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-10.1%) and Swaziland (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+41 p.p.) and Egypt (+8.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tunisia, South Africa and Swaziland saw its share reduced by -2%, -15% and -22.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal in Africa, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Algeria stood at +13.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+27.7% per year) and Tunisia (+3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
