From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled cuts of turkey were exported in Africa; which is down by -19% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fresh or chilled turkey cut exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Tunisia was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 78% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Egypt (5.7%) and South Africa (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh or chilled turkey cut exports from Tunisia stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Egypt (+20.1%) and Namibia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest fresh or chilled turkey cut supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tunisia amounted to -3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+24.6% per year) and Namibia (+1.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -19.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Fresh Or Chilled Cuts Of Turkey
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of turkey decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fresh or chilled turkey cut imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 128%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Benin was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 44% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Gabon (9.3%) and Guinea (6.8%). Liberia (X tons), Togo (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Angola (X tons), Libya (X tons), Equatorial Guinea (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Benin decreased at an average annual rate of -2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritania (+60.0%), Libya (+54.8%), Cabo Verde (+41.7%), Ghana (+26.2%), Angola (+17.1%), South Africa (+3.9%) and Guinea (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Liberia (-3.1%), Togo (-3.8%), Gabon (-7.4%) and Equatorial Guinea (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana, Guinea, Cabo Verde, Libya, Angola and Mauritania increased by +9.8, +3.2, +2.8, +2.7, +2.4 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Benin ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled cuts of turkey in Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Gabon, with an 8% share.
In Benin, fresh or chilled turkey cut imports plunged by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+28.8% per year) and Gabon (-5.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -12.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
