The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh fish fillet exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together making up 78% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (6.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of -5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest fresh fish fillet supplying countries in Africa were Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Kenya ($X), together comprising 87% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uganda, with a CAGR of -0.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 48% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fresh or chilled fish fillets was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh fish fillet imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest importers of fresh or chilled fish fillets in 2021, accounting for approx. 20% and 17% of total imports, respectively. Mauritius (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.9% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.9%), Ghana (6%) and Zambia (5.6%). The following importers - Burundi (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +52.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Mauritius ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Lesotho, Kenya, Guinea, Zambia, Botswana, Algeria, Tanzania and Burundi, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +58.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
