In 2022, the African fresh pork cut market increased by 25% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +30.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork cut production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of fresh pork cut production, accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, fresh pork cut production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kenya (X tons), with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa stood at +1.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (+1.5% per year) and Kenya (+2.1% per year).

Exports in Africa

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat decreased by -41.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, fresh pork cut exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+39.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Namibia increased by +2.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fresh pork cut supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, fresh pork cut exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-3.5% per year) and Namibia (+22.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 26%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, when their volume decreased by -2% to X tons. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork cut imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 146% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mayotte (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented the main importers of fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat in 2022, reaching approx. 22% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Mozambique (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (8.8%), Lesotho (8.2%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (6%). Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Comoros (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Comoros (with a CAGR of +96.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fresh pork cut importing markets in Africa were Angola ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. Mayotte, Lesotho, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwe, Comoros and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Comoros, with a CAGR of +71.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per ton), while Mayotte ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
