Frozen Pork Carcase Market Size in Africa

The African frozen pork carcase market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork carcase production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of frozen pork carcase production, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

In 2022, shipments abroad of frozen carcases of pig meat decreased by -64.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork carcase exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 111% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 50% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (14%), Congo (10%) and Namibia (5.8%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+191.3%), Swaziland (+38.1%), Congo (+29.2%) and Namibia (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +191.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Swaziland (+18 p.p.), Botswana (+14 p.p.), Congo (+9.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-44.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Botswana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +190.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of frozen carcases of pig meat decreased by -14.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork carcase imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 36% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total imports. Gabon (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+22.6%), Ghana (+15.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.8%), Gabon (+3.0%) and Namibia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Namibia increased by +14, +9.3, +5.1, +4.8 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest frozen pork carcase importing markets in Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Namibia ($X) and Angola ($X), together accounting for 50% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Ghana and Gabon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Among the main importing countries, Liberia, with a CAGR of +22.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
