Tunisia was the major exporter of frozen crabs and crabs meat in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of frozen crabs and crabs meat decreased by -33.3% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen crab and crab meat imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. In value terms, Namibia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen crabs and crabs meat in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 10% share.
