In 2021, the African prepared dish and meal market increased by 0.6% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 51% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Tunisia (7.8%) and Morocco (5.6%). Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +19.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 42% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, prepared dish and meal imports in Africa soared to X tons, with an increase of 16% on the year before. In general, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared dish and meal imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The purchases of the one major importers of prepared dishes and meals, namely Mozambique, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 86%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Mozambique.
