Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -7.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -12.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the key exporter of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved, comprising 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), achieving a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved frozen potato exports from Egypt stood at +3.9%. At the same time, South Africa (+14.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Preserved frozen potato imports surged to X tons in 2021, jumping by 58% compared with 2020. In general, imports saw a prominent increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) was the main importer of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Africa, creating 56% of total import. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), making up a 5.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +65.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved frozen potato importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Libya ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports. Mauritius, Botswana, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Namibia, Cabo Verde and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +58.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 13%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
