Frozen Whole Chicken Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African frozen whole chicken market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Nigeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of frozen whole chickens, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen whole chicken exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) held an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Congo (X%). Benin (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen whole chicken exports from South Africa stood at -X%. At the same time, Benin (+X%), Uganda (+X%), Namibia (+X%) and Congo (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +X% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Namibia, Congo, Benin and Uganda increased by +X, +X, +X and +X percentage points, respectively. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
