The total production indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +60.4% against 2013 indices. Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of frozen whole fish was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -19.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole fish exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Mauritania (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together resulting at 87% of total export. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 5.1% share of total exports. Rwanda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +85.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Seychelles ($X), Namibia ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 51% of total exports. Senegal, Mauritania, South Africa and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +71.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of frozen whole fish decreased by -3.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole fish imports declined slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest importers of frozen whole fish, together constituting 63% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 46% of total imports. Ghana, Mauritius, Cameroon, South Africa, Seychelles, Benin, Zambia, Tunisia, Mali and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +23.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
