Fructose Market Size in Africa

After two years of decline, the African fructose market increased by 4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Fructose Production in Africa

In value terms, fructose production expanded remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

For the fifth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of fructose and fructose syrup, which increased by 34% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, fructose exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +138.9% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Swaziland dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 5.5% share, followed by Tunisia (4.6%). Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fructose exports from Swaziland stood at +18.0%. At the same time, Tunisia (+37.1%) and Egypt (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Swaziland (+33 p.p.) and Tunisia (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -27.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) remains the largest fructose supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland amounted to +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+3.3% per year) and Tunisia (+43.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of fructose and fructose syrup, when their volume decreased by -5.2% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, fructose imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +59.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the key importers of fructose and fructose syrup, together committing 75% of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Mayotte (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mayotte (with a CAGR of +53.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fructose and fructose syrup in Africa, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with an 8.9% share.

In South Africa, fructose imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+4.1% per year) and Algeria (+8.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 3.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Mayotte ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
