Candied Fruit Market Size in Africa

The African candied fruit market rose modestly to $X in 2021, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. In value terms, candied fruit production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -3.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of candied fruit production was Nigeria (X tons), comprising approx. 24% of total volume. Moreover, candied fruit production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Egypt (X tons), twofold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Nigeria stood at +12.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Egypt (+7.8% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.3% per year).

Candied Fruit Exports

Exports in Africa

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of candied fruits increased by 6.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 202% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, candied fruit exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 55%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of candied fruits, constituting 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a 25% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the candied fruits exports, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012 to 2021. Tunisia (-5.0%) and South Africa (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+56 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-51.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest candied fruit supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt stood at +22.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-15.1% per year) and Tunisia (-6.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, candied fruit export price increased by +100.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 71% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of candied fruits was finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candied fruit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main importers of candied fruits in Africa, together constituting 43% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held an 8.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Gambia (7.6%), Egypt (5.4%) and Mayotte (5%). The following importers - Tunisia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Gambia (with a CAGR of +34.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Tunisia, Seychelles, Botswana, Senegal, Gambia, Lesotho, Kenya and Mayotte, which together accounted for a further 25%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +30.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
