In 2021, the African furnace burner market decreased by -33.3% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, furnace burner production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Furnace Burner Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of furnace burners, mechanical stokers, mechanical grates and mechanical ash dischargers were exported in Africa; surging by 6.4% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 69%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, furnace burner exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of furnace burners, mechanical stokers, mechanical grates and mechanical ash dischargers, generating 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), comprising a 19% share of total exports. Niger (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+54.9%), Niger (+41.2%), Egypt (+37.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+27.1%) and Kenya (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.9% from 2012-2021. Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Egypt (+18 p.p.), Niger (+4.4 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest furnace burner supplier in Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -8.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (+18.7% per year) and Egypt (+1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -13.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Congo (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Furnace Burner Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of furnace burners, mechanical stokers, mechanical grates and mechanical ash dischargers, when their volume decreased by -61.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, furnace burner imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 44% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. Libya (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the furnace burners, mechanical stokers, mechanical grates and mechanical ash dischargers imports, with a CAGR of +32.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+2.9%) and Angola (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-2.7%), Libya (-2.9%), Egypt (-4.0%) and Algeria (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria increased by +40 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Algeria ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 51% of total imports. South Africa, Libya, Angola and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Libya, with a CAGR of +27.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 48% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+31.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
