Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fuse and detonator exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 11% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zambia (+4.4 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fuse and detonator supplier in Africa, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+0.6% per year) and Zambia (+0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fuse and detonator export price decreased by -11.2% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 54%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators imported in Africa soared to X tons, picking up by 16% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, fuse and detonator imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the major importers of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators, together committing 61% of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9.7% share.

In South Africa, fuse and detonator imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+1.4% per year) and Ghana (+13.4% per year).
