Gear Box Market Size in Africa

The African gear box market reduced to $X in 2022, dropping by -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, posted a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gear box production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 28%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, gear box exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

South Africa represented the major exporter of gear boxes in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was near 55% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Tunisia (17%). The following exporters - Zambia (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 4.5% of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of gear boxes. At the same time, Zambia (+24.9%), Morocco (+23.3%) and Tunisia (+20.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+15 p.p.), Tunisia (+14 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-3 p.p.) and South Africa (-26.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest gear box supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports. Zambia and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.9%.

Among the main exporting countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +40.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, gear box export price increased by +82.6% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of gear boxes increased by 11% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 214%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, gear box imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 103%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Morocco dominates imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 62% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X units). All these countries together held near 14% share of total imports. The following importers - Egypt (X units), Nigeria (X units), Botswana (X units), Ghana (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Sudan (X units) - together made up 14% of total imports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gear boxes imports, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+14.4%), Tunisia (+12.0%), Ghana (+7.8%), Nigeria (+6.5%), Sudan (+4.3%) and Algeria (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco increased by +50 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gear boxes in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 4.9% share.

In Morocco, gear box imports increased at an average annual rate of +26.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+2.2% per year) and Algeria (+2.5% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild descent.
