Ghee Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African ghee market increased by 5.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Ghee Production in Africa

In value terms, ghee production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Ethiopia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Somalia (X tons), together comprising 88% of total production. Burkina Faso, South Africa, Eritrea and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ghee Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of ghee were exported in Africa; increasing by 12% on 2021. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -0.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ghee exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 50% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Uganda (20%) and Kenya (5.4%).

Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of ghee. At the same time, Uganda (+15.5%), Kenya (+14.4%) and South Africa (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +15.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uganda and Kenya increased by +14 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uganda ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 94% of total exports.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +24.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee export price increased by +10.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ghee Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of ghee in Africa amounted to X tons, increasing by 8.3% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 42%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ghee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 46%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 35% of total imports. Libya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Algeria (18%), Nigeria (6.8%) and Ghana (6.4%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +37.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ghee in Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Libya ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 14% share.

In Egypt, ghee imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Libya (+6.8% per year) and Algeria (-6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee import price increased by +31.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 48%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
