In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest gin and geneva supplier in Africa, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +15.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (-1.6% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+32.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -11.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Uganda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Gin and geneva imports fell to X litres in 2022, waning by -1.9% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -15.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gin and geneva imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the six major importers of gin and geneva, namely Togo, South Africa, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Rwanda and Equatorial Guinea, represented more than half of total import. Kenya (X litres), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), Morocco (X litres), Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Namibia (X litres), Mozambique (X litres) and Tanzania (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +29.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gin and geneva in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.8% share.
In South Africa, gin and geneva imports increased at an average annual rate of +22.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+5.8% per year) and Ghana (+17.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
