Ginger Market Size in Africa

After two years of growth, the African ginger market decreased by -3.5% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ginger Production in Africa

In value terms, ginger production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 127%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of ginger production, comprising approx. 85% of total volume. Moreover, ginger production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cameroon (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Nigeria, ginger production expanded at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cameroon (+3.9% per year) and Mali (-2.6% per year).

In 2022, the average ginger yield in Africa fell modestly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. The yield indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ginger yield increased by +8.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of ginger were harvested in Africa; almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to ginger production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of ginger increased by 111% to X tons, rising for the seventh year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 151% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ginger exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. Uganda (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+84.5%), Uganda (+22.5%) and South Africa (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +84.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+13 p.p.), Uganda (+3.9 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 1.8% share.

In Nigeria, ginger exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+4.4% per year) and Uganda (+17.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Ginger Imports

Imports in Africa

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of ginger decreased by -13.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, ginger imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 44%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Morocco (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) represented roughly 50% of total imports in 2022. Sudan (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Burundi (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burundi (with a CAGR of +114.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ginger in Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco totaled +14.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sudan (-5.7% per year) and Egypt (+2.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -17.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
