Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gingerbread exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 83%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa represented the major exporter of gingerbread in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons) and Kenya (X tons). All these countries together took near 38% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to gingerbread exports from South Africa stood at +3.6%. At the same time, Rwanda (+22.4%), Nigeria (+4.1%) and Kenya (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-25.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+23 p.p.), Nigeria (+11 p.p.), Rwanda (+6.9 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-41.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest gingerbread supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, gingerbread exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-2.3% per year) and Rwanda (+85.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+51.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of gingerbread increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gingerbread imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of gingerbread imports in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together resulting at 32% of total import. Botswana (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Libya (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X tons), Benin (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each recorded an 11% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +34.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest gingerbread importing markets in Africa were Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together accounting for 29% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +29.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
