In 2021, the African glass electrical insulator market increased by 15% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 228%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass electrical insulator exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 270%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Tunisia represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which reached 63% of total exports. South Africa (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Botswana (X units). All these countries together took near 34% share of total exports.

Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +28.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+78.7%) and South Africa (+22.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +78.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia, South Africa and Botswana increased by +43, +12 and +9.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest glass electrical insulator supplier in Africa, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 7% share of total exports.

In Tunisia, glass electrical insulator exports expanded at an average annual rate of +41.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+17.9% per year) and Botswana (+34.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of glass electrical insulators increased by 11% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, glass electrical insulator imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 44%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Tunisia (X units) and Libya (X units) represented roughly 30% of total imports in 2021. Nigeria (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units), Algeria (X units), Egypt (X units), Angola (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together held near 51% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +58.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest glass electrical insulator importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Libya ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 46% of total imports. Algeria, Tanzania, Nigeria, Angola, Ethiopia and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +61.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Ethiopia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
