In 2021, the amount of glucose and glucose syrup exported in Africa surged to X tons, increasing by 34% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, glucose exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a strong increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the largest exporter of glucose and glucose syrup, mixing up 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 34% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest glucose supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together accounting for 98% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +24.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of glucose and glucose syrup decreased by -7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, glucose imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 27%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) were the largest importers of glucose and glucose syrup, together making up 74% of total imports. The following importers - Morocco (X tons), Togo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+24.9%), Swaziland (+22.8%), Morocco (+18.2%), Togo (+16.3%), Tanzania (+12.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+10.8%), Zambia (+10.4%), Tunisia (+6.4%), Kenya (+6.1%), Algeria (+4.0%) and Sudan (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Swaziland, Morocco, Zambia and Togo increased by +4.1, +3.8, +2.1, +2.1 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glucose and glucose syrup in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (+5.6% per year) and South Africa (-0.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 9.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
