The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Egypt was the key exporter of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), constituting a 12% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -31.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, starch glue imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Algeria (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) represented roughly 34% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (8.2%), Tunisia (7.1%) and Egypt (4.9%). The following importers - South Africa (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest starch glue importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 40% of total imports.

Swaziland, with a CAGR of +33.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
