In 2022, approx. X tons of glutamic acid and its salts were exported in Africa; with an increase of 28% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, glutamic acid exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Rwanda (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented roughly 48% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by South Africa (11%) and Uganda (7.6%). Egypt (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest glutamic acid supplying countries in Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Rwanda ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 67% share of total exports. Senegal, Uganda, Egypt, Zambia and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Uganda, with a CAGR of +28.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, imports of glutamic acid and its salts in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 22% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glutamic acid imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +94.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 61%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 64% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (7.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.1%). The following importers - Egypt (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+13.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.0%), South Africa (+7.1%), Egypt (+6.8%) and Senegal (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glutamic acid and its salts in Africa, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.1% share.
In Nigeria, glutamic acid imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+5.1% per year) and Senegal (+2.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
