In 2021, exports of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes in Africa surged to X tons, picking up by 46% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crude glycerol exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) was the largest exporter of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes in Africa, constituting 89% of total export. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest crude glycerol supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+1.3% per year) and Tunisia (+14.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -19.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X tons of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes were imported in Africa; falling by -1.8% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -6.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crude glycerol imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2021. Egypt (X tons) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sudan (5.9%). The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Libya (X tons) - each reached a 4.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to crude glycerol imports into South Africa stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Libya (+41.4%), Mozambique (+33.5%), Sudan (+16.7%) and Egypt (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Sudan (+4.2 p.p.), Egypt (+3.4 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.1 p.p.), South Africa (+1.9 p.p.) and Libya (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes in Africa, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.5% share.

In South Africa, crude glycerol imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sudan (+14.6% per year) and Egypt (+5.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 43% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
