Golf Equipment Market Size in Africa

The African golf equipment market declined dramatically to $X in 2022, waning by -62.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, golf equipment production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 31%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of golf clubs and other golf equipment increased by 14% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,372% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, golf equipment exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 336%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the main exporter of golf clubs and other golf equipment, making up 59% of total exports. Rwanda (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X units) and Mauritius (X units). All these countries together took near 30% share of total exports. Tanzania (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to golf equipment exports from South Africa stood at -5.5%. At the same time, Morocco (+76.5%), Tanzania (+26.6%), Mauritius (+25.8%) and Rwanda (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +76.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Rwanda, Morocco, Mauritius and Tanzania increased by +12, +9.3, +8 and +4.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest golf equipment supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -4.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+32.7% per year) and Morocco (+38.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 279% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of golf clubs and other golf equipment increased by 18% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, golf equipment imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ethiopia (X units) and Mauritius (X units), together making up an 11% share of total imports. Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units), Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units), Tanzania (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Nigeria (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+25.6%), Ethiopia (+22.7%), Mozambique (+7.3%), Mauritius (+6.5%), Tanzania (+4.7%), Morocco (+3.7%) and Nigeria (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012-2022. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kenya (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+7.1 p.p.), Ethiopia (+5.6 p.p.), Mauritius (+1.8 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kenya (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported golf clubs and other golf equipment in Africa, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 2.7% share.

In South Africa, golf equipment imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+8.1% per year) and Morocco (+6.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -15.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent.
