As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of granite (crude). At the same time, Mozambique (+8.8%) and Zimbabwe (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2022. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Mozambique (+9.9 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-5.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest crude granite supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), together comprising 80% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +7.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 6.1%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the seventh consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of granite (crude), which increased by 4.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 340% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, crude granite imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 157%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Mozambique was the key importer of granite (crude) in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together achieving a 40% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the granite (crude) imports, with a CAGR of +123.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+47.5%), Nigeria (+40.2%), Egypt (+23.2%), South Africa (+21.9%) and Tunisia (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Mozambique (+54 p.p.), Algeria (+8.3 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-2.3 p.p.), South Africa (-5.9 p.p.) and Tunisia (-44.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granite (crude) in Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mozambique stood at +67.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+19.6% per year) and South Africa (+21.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
