In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) represented the main exporter of granite, sandstone and other building stone in Africa, constituting 75% of total export. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together constituting a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Eritrea (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) - each reached a 3.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Eritrea (with a CAGR of +19,848.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest granite, sandstone and other building stone supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together comprising 69% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Namibia, Eritrea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
Eritrea, with a CAGR of +3,507.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (-1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
Imports of granite, sandstone and other building stone totaled X tons in 2021, increasing by 2.9% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, imports of granite, sandstone and other building stone fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Mozambique (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) were the key importers of granite, sandstone and other building stone in 2021, finishing at near 35% and 29% of total imports, respectively. South Africa (X tons) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (5.7%), Benin (5.6%) and Tunisia (5.5%). Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Benin (with a CAGR of +93.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granite, sandstone and other building stone in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.9% share.
In Algeria, imports of granite, sandstone and other building stone expanded at an average annual rate of +26.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+48.8% per year) and Egypt (+16.7% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -16.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt contraction.
